1920 thru Current
Alfred Samango is the son of Italian immigrants who settled in the Italian section of West Philadelphia in the 1920s. His father was a stone mason and worked on custom homes in the suburban Philadelphia area (the Main Line). The family always maintained a presence in the construction business highlighted by owning a firm which developed custom and tract homes in the suburban Philadelphia area. The company specialized also in concrete-related work. Other contracts were with universities and colleges, i.e., Chaney State College, as well as roads and bridges.

In the late 40’s, Alfred’s family moved from West Philadelphia to Philadelphia (“Main Line”). Samango attended Lower Merion High School and participated in tract and football (co-captain of the track team.) and graduated in 1956. While in Lower Marion High School, Samango raced stock cars and, for two consecutive years, was the Eastern Hot Rod Association champion in the 200 horsepower stock car category.

Attended and received a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Villanova University in 1960. At the request of Villanova Track Coach Jumbo Jim Elliott, Samango participated in one tract meet versus Army. Due to a knee injury, all sports ended at Villanova in 1957. Operated concessions in Atlantic City’s Steel Pier. Concessions included the diving bell and diving horses. Also became a ski instructor at Big Boulder, Pennsylvania.

Upon graduation in 1960, Mr. Samango worked as a Sales Engineer for the Teletronics company, Ambler, Pennsylvania (1960 to 1962) and then with Sonex Inc., German Town, Philadelphia (1962 to 1969). Samango became National Sales Manager. The product involved telemetry equipment for defense contractors and the auto industry. Projects involved atomic testing with Sandia Corporation, re-entry vehicles for General Electric, Raytheon, aircraft equipment for Grumman Aircraft, systems for Ford and General Motors. Sold systems to Lakehurst Naval Air Station, site of the Hindenburg crash. While working with Sonex, Samango owned and operated an art gallery in Mt. Airy, Pennsylvania.

Purchased properties in Philadelphia area and New Jersey (Ocean City, Atlantic City, Ventnor, and Margate) in the 1960’s. Properties included the Byron Hotel, the Christiana Apartments and the Sterling Hotel. The hotels were later sold to the Sands Casino.

Left Sonex in 1969 to devote full-time to major concert promotions, including the Doors, ZZ Top. Personally managed several artists and booked a series of concerts on college campuses. Also was in the record production business with Gamble/Huff. Rented Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews house in Beverly Hills in order to concentrate on concert promotions. Close association with Kathy Smith.

In the 70’s, Samango purchased homes in Aspen, Colorado, Huntington Beach, California and Sunset Beach, Hawaii. Developed numerous properties in Sunset Beach (approximately 25). Had Hawaii real estate license for approximately 10 years. Hobby then big wave surfing on the North Shore. Surfing buddies included Jose Angel, Clyde and Eddie Aikau and Jeff Hackman. Was the first to use wetsuits and leashes. Everyone laughed but now everyone uses them.

While in Aspen (snow masks did not exist), pioneered dirt biking through the mountain passes. Began heli skiing in 2000. Purchased homes in Revelstoke, British Columbia and Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Currently in real estate development in Hawaii, Hawaii, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, Montana and Oregon. Recently created a coffee-based energy drink. Received FDA approvals and trademarks approvals. Did not proceed due to prohibitive cost of transportation.
